ACC Madukkarai Cement Works, in association with Coimbatore City Municipal Corporation (CCMC), has launched its Integrated Solid Waste Resource Management through an entrepreneurship programme in the city. Dr.K.Vijayakarthikeyan Commissioner of CCMC, along with Sai Ramesh, Director Plant, ACC Cements launched this initiative at ACC plant premises.

The Commissioner handed over the battery cart to the entrepreneurs. This battery cart will be used for resource recovery in the Corporation.

Integrated Solid Waste Resource Management programme is being implemented under the Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) of ACC, in association with Coimbatore City Municipal Corporation and Meipporul NGO. The aim of the project is to create social entrepreneurs who would support the Coimbatore Corporation in collection, segregation, processing and disposing of waste. The social entrepreneurs will supervise the waste collection and segregation process.

Currently, the domestic waste collected from each household is segregated under nine categories, as per the directive of the Coimbatore Corporation. As part of the initiative, the dry waste resource centre is being established and has been very effectively done for disposing of waste to recycle vendors. The organic waste is being handed over to composting plants and the farmers for converting them into organic manure. The non-recyclable plastic wastes are transported to ACC Cement for safe disposal of waste in cement kiln. This will reduce the amount of waste that is dumped in the Vellalore dump yard.

The project also offers incentive scheme for the waste collectors under the collection and classification of garbage. The project aims to create an integrated waste management system and support the Coimbatore Corporation in better management of garbage.

“We aim to create professional social entrepreneurs in the field of solid waste management. In 2016 we have plans to start a six months Waste-to-Wealth course for aspiring young entrepreneurs. The aim of this programme is to create professional social entrepreneurs in the field of solid waste management,” Sai Ramesh, Director Plant, ACC Cements, said.
