Coimbatore: A bunch of activists from Coimbatore with concern towards Mother Earth have started a campaign asking people not to use Straw at public places. The group aims at convincing the public about the hazards involved in a plastic straw.

A professional with Ofo Sara Natasha says, “We decided to visit the restaurants of the city and ask them to sign a pledge asking them not to give plastic straws by default when people order juice or soft drinks unless it’s demanded by an individual. If at all a straw is given it should be a paper straw which are bio-degradable on the part of restaurants”. We also plan to keep placards on the dining tables which would educate people about the disadvantages of plastic straws as well thank restaurants for taking the pledge”. Apart from that we also want school children to take the pledge saying they will not use plastic straws. Natasha says straws, plastic covers and tooth brushes are the three most important things causing pollution to ocean beds and landfills while also entering the marine bodies. Straws are the most commonly abused form of plastic, since these are dished out with absolutely no thought. Everyday thousands of these plastic straws are being used in juice shops and restaurants in this city alone.

Secretary of Residents Awareness Association of Coimbatore (RAAC) R Raveendran mentions, all restaurants are using only plastic straws along with tissue papers which cannot be recycled so we thought to visit each and every restaurant possible and ask them to switch over to paper straws. Already a few restaurants have started using paper straws and recyclable napkins. So if each restaurant follow suit then we can save lot of plastic thereby creating awareness among consumers. Most of them visit restaurants nowadays and they will know about the availability of paper straws. We should avoid use of plastic straws in tender coconut shops particularly”.

The campaign is set to begin around April 14th and paper straws are cost effective as well so restaurants can definitely use it is what he said. People should refuse use of plastic straws when they visit restaurants or juice shops. We should go for tissues made out of Bagasse.
