Thanjavur: An office-bearer of Thanjavur district unit of Tamil Nadu Congress Committee (TNCC) died and two others including his wife were grievously injured when a lorry collided into their car in Thanjavur late this evening.

TNCC President S Thirunavukkarasar visited hospital, paid his respects to the deceased and consoled the injured.

The 45-year-old S. Saminathan, an auditor by profession and resident of Mission street in Thanjavur, along with his wife Chitra (40) and his relative Radhakrishnan (60) was returning home in his car after participating in the hunger-strike, organized by Congress, in Trichy when the mishap occurred.

The hunger-strike had been organized by Congress condemning the BJP led central government for its reluctance to establish the Cauvery Management Board as per the final award of Cauvery water disputes tribunal.

Saminathan was driving the car. The car was proceeding on the road adjacent to the collector’s office when a lorry coming from the opposite direction unexpectedly crossed over and rammed into the car.

The injured were rushed to Thanjavur Medical College and Hospital where Saminathan succumbed to his injuries. The other two were admitted to the ICU of the hospital.

Later, talking to reporters, Mr Thirunavukkarasar announced that the medical expenses incurred by Chitra, who is the District President of Mahila Congress, and the educational expenses of her daughter who is now studying in Chennai would be borne by TNCC.
