Even before the excitement and controversy surrounding the Rs.570 crores that was seized around election time from three lorries near Tirupur died away, a mini-container lorry with Rs.20 lakhs, created flutter in Coimbatore today, when the driver whizzed past the police, who were carrying out checks in the area.

According to the police, since there was restriction for HT vehicles to enter certain parts of the city, the cops on duty waved the driver to stop the vehicle on the 100 Feet Road. But the driver went past, without stopping.

The police chased and stopped the vehicle. On questioning, the driver told that the vehicle, coming from Chennai, contained Rs.20 lakhs in coins, to be distributed to various banks in and around Coimbatore.

Police found the driver was under influence of liquor and was not giving proper reply.

The container was released after the driver produced the documents. But, the driver was fined for driving under the influence of alcohol, and the container was sent to a nationalised bank with police escort.
