Contract labourers of the city corporation have gone on strike demanding the implementation of new wages.

More than 2000 workers, employed by the contractors as cleaning staff, are working under contract. The labourers claim that they are not being paid properly and adequately by the contractors and have gone on strike as a result. A meeting was held between the city corporation and the workers, where the latter demanded that they be paid Rs.255 per day. The demand was not accepted. The meeting was not attended by the Mayor, Commissioner, and other important officials, much to the irritation of the workers.

The workers have threatened that if the wages are not revised, they would bring their families and gherao MLA Velumani’s house to protest.
