Coimbatore : With increasing sexual assaults on women, particularly girl students, police should convene interaction meeting with women’s organisation every month to create awareness and put an end to such incidents, AIDWA Vice President, U Vasuki said Friday.

Besides, there was the need to form committees to monitor the incidents of sexual harassment at workplace, Vasuki told reporters here.

Stating that the Coimbatore district collector should head such a committee, here she said the official should review whether Vishakha Committee was properly functioning at the place, where more than 10 women staff were employed.

She cited an incident of an agriculture student from Thiruvannamalai, who filed case against six teachers in the university for sexual harassment and the Court had ordered to provide a seat to Tamil Nadu Agricultural University here.

However, the student was not not given the seat, instead wanted her to withdraw the case, which was condemnable, Vasuki, who is also the CPIM Central Committee member, said.

Police action was not not satisfactory in the city, where sexual abuse on a four-year old girl child was reported from Thudiyalur, she said.

To prevent such sexual abuses, the police should convene meetings every month with women’s organisations and discuss the steps to be taken to put an end to such things, she said.

The major reason for such sexual assaults was liquor, which is available across the State and major revenue generator for the Government, Vasuki said.

Though AIDWA had written five letters to Chief Secretary, Girija Vaidyanathan to apprise her about the problems being faced by women, she had not not responded so far, Vasuki said.
