A couple today made a self immolation bid in front of the district collectorate, reportedly over the failure of police to take action against two persons, who had assaulted and threatened them a few days ago.

According to police, Dinesh and his wife Nithya of Vadavalli on the city outskirts came to the collectorate and suddenly poured kerosene on themselves. Policemen on duty overpowered them and took them to the nearby police station.

Interrogation revealed that two persons had assaulted them a few days ago due to some previous enmity. A complaint was lodged and police took them to custody and released the duo on the same day, who again returned and assaulted and threatened the couple of dire consequences, the couple told police.

The couple had gone to the city police commissioner’s office yesterday and attempted to immolate themselves. But some officials prevented them and sent them back, police added.
