Dressed up like big cats, farmers seek to capture leopard on the prowl

Coimbatore : Dressed up as tigers, leopards, lions and Tahrs, a group of farmers on Monday sought the intervention of the District Administration to prevail upon the forest department to drive away two leopards, which have become nightmare in the villages coming under Madukkarai forest range on the outskirts.

The farmers, affiliated to Tamil Nadu Farmers Association submitted a petition to the district collector, stating that the department was able to capture one leopard from the area, two months ago.However, two more leopards are on the prowl attacking goats and cattle and the humans are also living in danger, it said.

The farmers covered their body with props to look like lions,leopards, tigers and Nilgiri Tahrs, claiming that it was a representation of their living habitat, Association President S Palanisamy said.

The farmers in the area were earning very little income by rearing goats, hen and a few cows, which is now becoming the victims of the carnivore, he said.
