Coimbatore : Five persons, including a husband and wife, were taken into custody for questioning with regard to looting of gold and diamond ornaments after attacking a staff of a parcel service a fortnight ago, a senior police official said Thursday,

One Prithvi Singh was going on his motorcycle to the city airport with a parcel containing the ornaments, valued at Rs.2.50 crore around 5.30 AM on February 7 and a gang on motorcycles waylaid him at Peelamedu and fled with the bag containing the ornaments.

Based on the CCTV footage for the last 15 days in the vicinity of the parcel office, police managed to zero in five persons, including a woman working in the office and her husband, City Police Commissioner, Sumit Saran told reporters here.

Three of those secured were watching the movement of the staff and other visitors in the parcel office for the last 15 days, he said.

Besides, the monitoring of the cellphone of the woman revealed that a gang was discussing the movement of those going out with the parcel, which led to the suspicion in the involvement of those working in the office, he said.

This led to the conclusion that the woman in the office and her husband had conspired the robbery, the official said.

Stating that the booty was distributed among the gang members, who were sent to different parts of the State, he said that police have secured the couple and three others for interrogating.

Special teams, formed to recover all the ornaments have almost neared the culprits and they will be arrested soon, he said.
