Chennai: Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu today launched ten passenger trains with bio-toilets along the 114-kilometre-long Rameswaram-Manamadurai corridor in Tamil Nadu, making it the first green corridor. These trains will not discharge human wastes along the tracks. The trains will be launched at a function to be held at Madras Central railway station.

The ten passenger trains, consisting of 286 coaches, have been provided with bio-toilets.

The government has selected Okha-Kanalas Junction (141 Kilometres), Porbandar-Wansjaliya (34 Kilometres), and Jammu-Katra (78 Kilometres) routes for the next round of bio-toilet enabled trains. These routes have fewer trains running between them. 35 trains with about 1110 coaches will be fitted with bio-toilets as part of this project.

The bio-toilets were developed by the Indian Railways and the and Defence Research & Development Organization (DRDO). The Ministry of Railways has planned to make all the trains human-discharge-free by September 2019.
