A woman and her 21-year-old daughter today attempted to commit suicide by immolating themselves with petrol, on the district collectorate premises.

According to police, the woman Jaimunissa and daughter Barkhatnissa, of Mangalam near Tirupur, had come to the collectorate. Suddenly they doused themselves with petrol and were about light matchstick, police said.

But the alert policewomen on duty, overpowered them and aborted their attempt.

Preliminary inquiry revealed that dispute with the son was said to be the reason for attempting to take such an extreme step. Both were taken to nearby police station for detained investigation.
