Citing various health hazards, members of the Hindu Makkal Katchi on Monday petitioned the District Administration to stop the mixing of sewage water in the Ukkadam Big Tank here.

Claiming that the mixing of sewage, which has been unattended for long by the administration, has been a hindrance to the people, the members in the petition, have also stated that people who consume the fish caught from the lake were prone to getting affected by diseases.

“We have given numerous representations about the issue and the authorities have been very lethargic in dealing with the issue. The stench emanating from the water body is too much to bear for the people around it,” Ganapathi Ravi, State Coordinator of the party said.

He further claimed that temporary measures including cleaning the bunds would not help as the only solution is to curb the mixing of sewage water in the lake.

The members also requested to repair the roads in the Kembatti Colony area and also mentioned in the petition that the stray dogs in the area were creating a ruckus and that they should be dealt with immediately.

Meanwhile, a senior official from the Coimbatore City Municipal Corporation said that the officials were planning to install water treatment plants in all the lakes. “Fund has been allotted in the budget released this year and we will start work soon,” the official added.
