The Department of Mathematics with Computer Applications at PSG College of Arts and Science organised MATHLET ’25, an inter-school mathematics outreach programme, at the GRD Auditorium on Wednesday. The programme was designed to nurture problem-solving abilities, mathematical creativity, and logical reasoning among school students, drawing enthusiastic participation from across the city.
This year’s edition of MATHLET witnessed the participation of nearly 700 students representing 18 schools. The competitions were structured to bring out not only numerical ability but also innovative approaches to applying mathematics in day-to-day life. More than 50 teams registered for the contests, which included a wide range of activities such as IPL Auction, Math Quiz, Math Art, Math Modeling, and Cook with Math. Each event was tailored to combine subject knowledge with creativity, ensuring that students experienced mathematics in engaging and unconventional formats.
The chief guest,M.Karunakaran,Deputy Director of the District Employment Office and Career Guidance Centre, addressed the gathering and emphasised the importance of mathematics in everyday life. He highlighted how mathematical thinking forms the foundation for careers across disciplines and urged students to approach the subject with curiosity rather than fear. His address drew attention to the real-world applications of mathematics in technology, finance, research, and problem-solving.
The students displayed remarkable enthusiasm and talent throughout the day. The PSBB Millennium School claimed the overall championship trophy for its consistent performance across events, while PSG Sarvajana School secured the runner-up position.The spirited competition between teams demonstrated not only academic excellence but also collaboration and creative thinking, with many participants showcasing innovative problem-solving methods.
The programme was conducted under the leadership of Dr.T.Kannaian,Secretary; Dr.M.Senguttuvan, Principal in-charge; Dr.M.Umarani,Vice Principal; Dr.M. Latha Maheswari, Dean of Computational Mathematics; and Dr.K. Banupriya, Head of the Department.Faculty coordinators Mrs. V. Umamaheswari, Dr.D.Vivek,and Dr. K. Ramkumar guided the smooth execution of the event.
MATHLET ’25 not only celebrated the joy of mathematics but also encouraged young learners to view the subject as an integral part of intellectual growth and innovation. The event concluded with participants gaining both recognition and renewed interest in exploring the beauty of mathematics.
