Security beefed up in Chennai, police deployed near establishments run by Kannadigas

Security remained right across Chennai today with police personnel being deployed at various establishments run by Kannadigas, even as several political parties announced agitations.

According to sources there has been no bus services to Bengaluru from the Koyambedu bus terminus. The prevailing uncertainty has resulted in people from Bengaluru and other places to join their families for Bakrid and Onam.

Police sources said it was risky to travel by private vehicles too.

Meanwhile, several Tamil organisations and political parties including Vijaykanth-led DMDK planned demonstrations in front of Karnataka Bank branches and Udipi hotels today. Members belonging to Naam Tamilar Katchi gathered in front of the Data Udipi Hotel at Chintradripet this morning. However, the strong presence of police in front of the hotel prevented any untoward incident.

“There were around 50 police personnel near the hotel. When the protesters attempted to lock the hotel, around 25 of them were detained,” sources said. Members of the Tamilaga Valvurimai Katchi too held protests in some parts of the City yesterday.

A large number of police personnel have been deployed, particularly near 171 establishments – banks, hotels, bakeries, halls – run by Kannadigas, Around 150 patrolling teams are maintaining vigil round the clock.

Additional security has been provided at branches of State Bank of Mysore and Karnataka Bank and around Data Udipi chain of hotels, New Woodlands Hotel. Protesters pelted stones at the Sangeeta Hotel at Velachery this morning.
