Senior Central Excise officials booked for graft

The Central Bureau of Investigation has filed a case against Janaki Arunkumar, Principal Chief Commissioner of Central Excise, Chennai Zone, and four other officials in a corruption case.

In a press release, the agency said it has filed case against Janaki and four other superintendents of Central Excise – Paul Sudhakar, Manoharan, Dhanasekaran and Selvaraj.

Sudhakar and others went to Janaki’s residence on November 29 and handed over Rs. 2 lakh bribe, the statement said.

Following a tip off, the sleuths conducted searches at seven places in Chennai including residential and official premises of the accused and recovered incriminating documents. They seized Rs. 2 lakhs and another Rs. 2.65 lakhs and a locker key.

“During the search, the agency also found Rs.7.93 lakhs in cash and froze four bank accounts. Other investments and gold ornaments are being verified as search is continuing,” the release added.
