Coimbatore: India ranks first when it comes to growing small onions with Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh leading the charts.

In the state of Tamil Nadu- Dindigul, Tiruppur, Perambalur, Namakkal, Theni and Madurai are known for producing small onions.

Main varieties under cultivation are CO1, CO2 and CO (On) 5. Small onions are consumed in many households; demands for which are met by bringing onions from the states of Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh.

A lot of these small onions are exported to countries like Sri Lanka, Indonesia, Thailand, Singapore and Malaysia though the export demand for small onion in the current season is not much as per the reports of trade sources.

Currently fresh onions are being supplied to Trichy and Dindigul markets from Dharapuram, Palladam and Udumalpet. The month of June will see arrival of these small onions from Mysore too.

The TN-IAM Project funded Price Forecasting Scheme of the Centre for Agricultural and Rural Development Studies, Tamil Nadu Agricultural University analyzed historical prices that prevailed in Dindigul Market for small onion over the last 15 years.

As per the results of the time series analysis, the farmgate price of good quality small onion during harvest (May- June, 2018) would be around Rs. 25/ kg.

The price is bound to change depending on the arrivals from Mysore. Hence, the farmers are advised to take appropriate selling decision.
