Shops, establishments remain closed; Coimbatore peaceful

All shops and business establishments, tourist spots remained closed in Coimbatore, Tirupur and Nilgiris district as a mark of respect to the late Chief Minister, Jayalalithaa, today.

Public transport including Government buses, taxis and auto rickshaws were off the roads, portraying a bandh like situation, police said.

However, private vehicles were seen plying on the road in very limited numbers.

Almost all the shops and commercial establishments and engineering industries and garment factories remained closed in Coimbatore and Tirupur districts, police added.

In Nilgiris district, major tourist spots such as Botanical Gardens, Sims Park and Pykara dam were closed to the public, even as a few tourists were badly hit due to closure of shops and hotels.

Buses from Kerala and Karnataka stopped plying to Tamil Nadu fearing violence.

AIADMK workers were seen paying homage to the portraits of their ‘AMMA’ by erecting pandals at road sides across these districts, even as adequate police forces were deployed to meet any eventuality.

Meanwhile, the condition of a 45-year old party worker, Ramachandran, who attempted to commit suicide last night near Annur, some 40 km from here, is said to be serious and is treated in the Government Hospital here, police said.
