In a renewed push to safeguard one of the region’s most vital water sources, Siruthuli has intensified its efforts to restore the Noyyal River, calling for collective action from stakeholders across sectors.

Reaffirming its long-standing commitment to environmental conservation and sustainable water management, Siruthuli highlighted the ecological and agricultural significance of the Noyyal River, which originates from the Vellingiri Hills and stretches nearly 170 kilometres. The river plays a crucial role in groundwater recharge, irrigation, and maintaining ecological balance in Coimbatore and adjoining districts.

Over the past 23 years, the organisation has adopted a comprehensive, basin-wide restoration approach, focusing on reviving interconnected water bodies such as streams, check dams, anicuts, and irrigation channels. Despite challenges including pollution, encroachments, and declining water flow, Siruthuli has executed several impactful projects.

Key interventions include the restoration of Sadivayal Check Dam, Masaorambu Stream, Mundanthurai Check Dam, Pudukaadu Anicut, and Kuniyamuthur Anicut—projects that have significantly improved water storage capacity and strengthened agricultural livelihoods across thousands of acres.

As part of its ongoing outreach, Siruthuli recently organised the “Noyyal River Walk,” a public awareness initiative aimed at highlighting the urgent need for river conservation. The walk, held from Perur Padithurai to Kurichi Anicut, witnessed participation from a broad spectrum of stakeholders, including government officials, industry representatives, farmer associations, and members of the public.

Addressing the gathering, Vanitha Mohan, Managing Trustee of Siruthuli, underscored the importance of collective responsibility. “The Noyyal River is the lifeline of the Kongu region. Its restoration demands sustained, collaborative efforts. Through our integrated initiatives, we aim to revive the river ecosystem and ensure long-term water security,” she said.

In addition to restoration projects, Siruthuli is implementing the “Nalla Thanni” initiative across multiple locations, focusing on improving water quality through nature-based solutions such as vetiver plantations and ecological filtration systems.

With growing environmental concerns and increasing pressure on water resources, Siruthuli has urged corporates, institutions, and citizens to actively participate in restoring and protecting the Noyyal River—ensuring a sustainable future for generations to come.
