Ukkadam people’s collective plans hunger strike over flyover on Monday

Coimbatore: Ukkadam Peoples’ Livelihood Protection Collective has announced a hunger strike on Monday against the government’s new project of constructing a flyover between Ukkadam-Karumbukadai.
To reduce traffic congestion near Ukkadam, former Chief Minister J Jayalalitha in 2013 announced a new flyover to be constructed between Oppanakkara Street and Athupalam. The construction works were now likely to take off. There are more than 1,000 houses to be discarded for the construction.

People have residing in CMC colony for more than 70 years, the agitators said, adding that the Government should provide housing facility near the colony. The whole process should be transparent, said Parthiban, member the collective.

Athiyamaan, senior member in Ukkadam Peoples’ Livelihood Protection Collective, told The Covai Post that the construction plan had been changed. In this plan, the flyover would be between Ukkadam and Athupalam, which would not bring any changes in traffic congestion. He also mentioned that the Tamil Nadu Housing Board should provide housing units in the same area.

According to the statement, the collective said that with these demands we are approaching for hunger strike on June 18, the Government should make transparent planning in construction and provide people with housing units within Ukkadam region.
