The Government’s move to collect cancelled denominations as tax amount has yielded good results in the city as an unprecedented Rs. 11.02 crores was collected until 8.30 pm here today.

The corporation had earlier announced that it would collect cancelled Rs. 500 and Rs. 1,000 denomination notes towards water and property taxes on Thursday. Though the decision to extend the collection for three more days was announced later, people thronged the Corporation office as early as 8 am to pay the tax amount with old denominations.

V Srikanth, a businessman who was there to pay his tax, said that he had to wait for more than three hours as there were too many people. “They have enough staff and computers. But the number of people queuing up to pay tax was more than normal and a little difficult to handle,” he added.

R Pechiyammal, a septuagenarian, welcomed the plan to collect tax via old notes as more people showed up.

Meanwhile, four systems with two officials each were installed to clear the rush and the collection was still on when this story was published.
