Upset over daughter eloping and marrying, family of four commit suicide

Upset over their daughter eloping and marrying her lover, a couple committed suicide along with their teenaged children, by consuming pesticides in Peddanaickenpalayam near Athur in Salem district.

The incident came to notice, when the neighbours found the door of their house closed from inside and on information police rushed to the spot. The cops who broke open the door found the four lying dead with foam coming out of their mouths.

According to police, the couple Rajendran, a farmer and his wife Rani opposed their elder daughter Mohana’s love affair with an auto rickshaw driver and advised her not to mingle with him.

However, she continued to meet him secretly and one fine day eloped and married the driver Mani. The newly married couple also sought protection from nearby Karipatti police station, they said.

As Rajendran lodged a missing complaint, police informed them that their daughter has entered into wedlock with Mani and has sought police protection from the family members .

Pained and upset over the development and unable to face the relatives and neighbours, the couple committed suicide by consuming pesticides, along with daughter Aarti (19) and son Naveenkumar (15), police said.
