Coimbatore– In a first-of-its-kind initiative for India’s conservation sector, Vanrakshak today launched its first Vanrakshak Store, marking the beginning of a nationwide network that aims to bring together modern conservation technology, community participation, sustainable livelihoods and responsible eco-tourism under one platform.

The initiative comes at a time when India’s forests are facing growing challenges—from rising incidents of forest fires and increasing human-wildlife conflict to the need for advanced monitoring technologies and greater community engagement. While Forest Departments continue to safeguard the country’s invaluable natural heritage, the evolving nature of these challenges calls for stronger collaboration between government, local communities, technology providers and responsible citizens.

Built on years of working alongside Forest Departments across India, Vanrakshak was born as a Make in India Initiative to enhance the conservation efforts rather than a specialised retail destination. Each store is envisioned as a dedicated conservation platform where frontline forest personnel can access modern field technologies, local communities can build sustainable livelihoods, visitors can engage with India’s wildlife story and conservation stakeholders across the nation can come together to strengthen forest protection.

“The future of conservation cannot rest solely on the shoulders of Forest Departments. It requires technology, community participation and public awareness to work together,” said Mr. Sumit Sabharwal, Founder of Vanrakshak. “Our vision is to build a nationwide network of Vanrakshak Stores that becomes a trusted destinations for conservation—connecting innovation with grassroots action and ensuring that the people living closest to our forests become active partners in protecting them.”

Each Vanrakshak Store will showcase specialised solutions for wildlife conservation and forest management, including technologies for forest fire preparedness, wildlife monitoring, AI-powered surveillance, GSM camera systems, drone-based applications, communication equipment, rescue and rehabilitation tools, and human-wildlife conflict mitigation. Beyond technology, the stores will promote awareness, demonstrate field solutions and encourage greater public participation in conservation.
Community development forms a cornerstone of the initiative. Vanrakshak will work closely with Self Help Groups (SHGs), women-led enterprises, tribal artisans and forest-fringe communities, providing a dedicated platform to showcase and market locally crafted, sustainable and forest-inspired products Nationally and Internationally. By connecting these communities with tourists, institutional buyers and conservation enthusiasts, the initiative aims to create meaningful livelihood opportunities while strengthening the link between conservation and local economic development.

Recognizing that India’s youth will play a vital role in protecting the country’s natural heritage, Vanrakshak also plans to facilitate practical training programmes through its stores in areas such as drone operations, wildlife rescue assistance, rehabilitation support, forest fire response, conservation technology and eco-tourism support services. These initiatives are intended to create skilled local manpower capable of supporting conservation efforts while generating employment opportunities in forest landscapes.

Vanrakshak further envisions building India’s first integrated conservation retail ecosystem by establishing Stores near Tiger Reserves, National Parks, Wildlife Sanctuaries, Zoos and major wildlife tourism destinations, while partnering with Forest Department souvenir shops, eco-tourism centres, SHG outlets and other forestry-related retail points across the country.

“Every Vanrakshak Store is designed with a larger purpose,” added Mr. Sumit Sabharwal, “Whether it is helping the forest guardians access better technology, creating a new source of income for a Rural Self Help Groups & Women Entreprenuers, training a young conservation professional or inspiring a tourist to become a lifelong advocate for wildlife, every initiative contributes to one shared mission—building a stronger future for India’s forests.”

As India advances towards balancing ecological conservation with sustainable development, Vanrakshak believes that protecting forests must also create opportunities for the people who depend on them.
