Water was released from Amaravathi dam to irrigate sugarcane and rice crops in about 25000 acres of land.
Chief Minister Edappadi K. Palaniswami ordered the release of water following an appeal from farmers in Karur to release water for irrigation as the water they received during the monsoon was inadequate. The water will be released for the next one week.
According to sources the Public Works Department released 440 cubic meter of water on Wednesday morning through the main canal that passes through the New Ayacut area. About 25,250 acres of land will be benefitted. Currently, the water level in the dam is 59.71ft on a 90 ft scale, sources added.
Though the Government Order stated that water would be released to both New Ayacut and Old Ayacut areas, farmers from the Old Ayacut said they do not require water right now. However, officials decided to release water to Old Ayacut too.
