Aalaporaan Tamizhan
Singers: Deepak, Kailash Kher, Sathya Prakash, Pooja
Lyrics: Vivek

Aalaporaan Tamizhan single seems to be a combination of various genres well knitted by the oscar winner with some feisty instrumentation and superior vocals. The Nadhaswaram portions guarantee a connect and nativity feel. Lyrics by Vivek have been pumped with words fantasising the Tamizhan and his tradition. The entire song seems to be very well structured. Sung by Deepak, Kailash Kher, Sathyaprakash and Pooja, the song consists of the use of indigenous instruments and native percussions. It is not an outright mass number but is rich in a lot of aspects.

Neethanae
Singers: A R Rahman, Shreya Ghoshal
Lyrics: Vivek

This melody by AR Rahman sung by himself and Shreya Ghoshal is slow and grows into the listener. Both AR Rahman and Shreya Ghoshal sound sweet throughout. There is use of simple yet elegant string instruments. It looks like a sitar and mandolin piece can also be detected. There is continual and repetitive use of a single word which gets the listener into a nice loop. Post the loop, there is a small transition to the carnatic swarams with the harmonium taking over and it gets back to another loop. A complete melody for Vijay’s Mersal by ARR.

Macho
Singers: Shweta Mohan, Sid Sriram
Lyrics: Vivek

Macho is a funky western style number with some use of electronic beats by AR Rahman. Sid Sriram is at his usual stylish self with the vocals and Shweta Mohan chips in with her superior voice as well. The song has a tinge of Indian flavour as well. Instruments are dominated by the digital board and synth takes the front seat. The loops are attractive and this peppy number seems like an instant hit among fans.

Mersal Arasan
Singers: Naresh Iyer, Vishwaprasadh, GV Prakash, Sharanya Srinivas, AR Rahman
Lyrics: Vivek

Mersal Arasan is the most complex number as it has numerous genres within the song. Starting off in the unique ARR style with the kids’ voices and chorus, it has a mild arabic touch to it. It majorly follows the folk route. The percussions are a major positive. The tune is catchy after a few listens and the lyrics follow a ‘thara local’ pattern that will attract the masses. A perfect fast and pacy number for both Vijay fans as well as ARR music lovers, who expect something new out of his music. Also, the finale with the trumpets are apt for Vijay’s classy dance moves that would enhance the visual experience.

Verdict: AR Rahman weaves out a mass based classy album fitting in all the elements required for Vijay’s screen presence!
