One’s metabolism is an extremely important chemical process in the body which depends on age, body size, physical activity, genetics etc. and tends to slow down with age. There are many advantages to having a high metabolism like the ability to burn more calories while resting, increased energy levels and an improved mood. The great news is it is possible to boost your metabolism and these 5 ways will help you do that.

1. Move

According to Healthline, the more active you are, the higher your metabolic rate. So make it a point to stay active. Especially if you have a desk job, try and get in as much physical activity as possible by using the stairs, going for a short walk every couple of hours, standing up often and dedicating time to exercise.

2. Build Muscle

Besides working on the cardio aspect of exercise, also schedule in strength and resistance training which is responsible for building muscle. According to Healthline, muscle is more metabolically active than fat so with it, even when your body is at rest, you will still be burning calories.

3. Add Protein

A healthy amount of protein helps to build the body’s amount of lean muscle which in turn boosts the metabolic rate. Add more milk, eggs, cheese, lean meat, nuts and seafood in your diet to help increase your protein intake.

4. Drink Water

It may seem simple but just drinking cold water can increase your metabolism. According to Prevention, the increase comes from the heat created by the body to bring cold water to body temperature.

5. Don’t Cut

You may think that reducing the amount of food you eat will help but it will actually do the opposite for your metabolism. When your body gets less food than it needs, it starts taking it from the body’s muscle tissue for energy; which is a complete no-no for anyone who wants to up their metabolism. Eat adequately with small, frequent meals which are enough for your body’s needs
