World Pie Day: Pie recipes bite the crust

Everyone likes sumptuous foods, and pie is one of them. Whether you like cherry, pumpkin, lemon, apple, chocolate, pecan or coconut pie, fruit pies, custard and cream pies, hearty main dish pies such as chicken or beef potpies, crusts that are made with rice, potato, graham cracker, corn or pastry, the possibilities are endless. Get the pioneering spirit back this holiday season, experiment and enjoy. March 14th is celebrated as the world pie day. The history of pie is rich in flavor. We know this, since the ancient Egyptians practices, they keep records and pie is included there, along with all the mysteries and charm of those long ago days.

From jam and jelly to freshly baked pies are the favorite dishes of many. Thanksgiving is the best time of the year, where you can offer numerous homemade pies to the loved ones or neighbors. Let’s explore some homemade freshly baked pie recipes below:

Apple Crumb Pie

Ingredients

1 cup flour
1/3 cup vegetable shortening, chilled
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/4 cup water, ice cold

Ingredients for filling

3 1/2 pounds apples, peeled, cored, sliced
1 Tablespoon lemon juice
1/3 cup sugar
3/4 teaspoon cinnamon, ground
1/4 teaspoon nutmeg, ground
1/4 teaspoon salt

Topping Ingredients:

3/4 cup brown sugar, firmly packed
1/2 teaspoon nutmeg, ground
1 cup flour
1/3 cup butter, chilled, cut in pieces
1. Preheat oven to 375 degrees F.
2. To make crust: mix together flour and salt in a medium bowl.
3. Use a pastry blender or 2 knives to cut the shortening into the flour mixture until coarse crumbs are formed.

Cheese Pie

Ingredients:

3 eggs
1 cup brown sugar
1 cup white sugar
1/2 cup melted butter
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1/2 teaspoon salt
2 Tablespoons flour
1 cup light cream
Pastry for 1 pie crust

Directions:

1. Beat eggs until light and frothy. Gradually beat in white sugar, brown sugar, and melted butter. Beat until fluffy.

2. Beat in vanilla, salt, and flour. Stir in light cream, mix well.

You can make chicken pie, onion, pepper and other kinds of pie. Pie is a popular food and its healthy. You can make the pie at home easily and relish the most sumptuous taste. Pie is very popular among people. You must try different kinds of pies and can offer a treat to your guests as well. There are recipes to make low calorie pies also. You can make a low calorie pumpkin pie. Not all pies are sweet. If you want to add a bit of spice to your life you can try out the pie recipes with meat. Shepherd’s pie is a classic example. You can make the shepherd’s pie with lamb. When it is made with meat it is known as cottage pie. Shepherd’s pie is made with onions, carrots, potatoes, tomatoes along with other ingredients.
