Chennai : Tamil Nadu Governor Banwari Lal Purohit on Monday appointed former bureaucrat to probe the allegations that a Virudhunagar college professor tried to goad girl students into “pleasing high university official” and nail the culprit so that she cannot escape.

In a late evening press statement, the Raj Bhavan announced that the governor ordered a thorough inquiry into the whole sordid affair of Virudhunagar college and named former member CAT, R Santhanam to probe the whole issue and ensure that no person who is guilty escaped.

According to allegation of four girl students, professor Nirmala Devi asked girl students to extend sexual favours to please high university officials. The allegations were later found corroborated in an audio clip that went viral on social media, in which the professor is alleged to be asking the girls to make compromises.

After the audio clip came in the public domain, the Madurai Kamaraj University, to which the college is affiliated, also set up a five-member probe panel. The professor is heard telling the students to grab the chance to do things secretly for a top official.

The state government has also sought a report from the varsity, which has suspended the professor on Monday.

According to sources, a police team visited her house in Virudhunagar but could not nab her.
