Chennai:Raj and his father, a priest, were removed from priestly duties after he ‘draped’ the goddess Abhaya Ambikai Ammal at the Mayuranathar temple in Mayiladuthurai.

Devotees at the temple were horrified when they saw the deity draped in salvar kameej, women’s dress favoured mostly in the north India but has become something of a national dress after its acceptance all over India.

Devotees cried sacrilege and sought action against the priest responsible for desecration of the goddess.

Salvar Kameej, or simply called the dress, has replaced the half sari and traditional sarees favoured by the women folk in South of Vindhyas too. Even school uniforms and college dress code prescribed body covering salvar kameej in south India these days.

However when two archakas, Raj and his father, were suspended by the temple authorities – Thiruvaduthurai Adheenam.

The incident took place on Friday last, when devotees got a jolt when Abhaya Ambikai ammal appeared dressed in what looked salwar kameej. Shocked devotees took photographs and shared it on social media.
