Nearly 3 lakh new Covid cases reported in India, death toll breaches 2,000-mark

India on Wednesday recorded nearly three lakh one-day cases and over 2,000 fatalities — the highest single-day spike — due to the Covid-19 infection. In the past 24 hours, India has seen over 2.95 lakh fresh Covid-19 cases, pushing the caseload in India to over 1.56 crore. The death toll in India due to the Covid-19 infection has reached 1.82 lakh after 2,023 Covid-19 patients succumbed to the virus, according to the Union health ministry.

The top 10 states that have contributed the most to the daily Covid-19 tally in the past 24 hours are Maharashtra (62,097 cases), Uttar Pradesh (29,574 cases), Delhi (28,395 cases), Karnataka (21,794 cases), Kerala (19,577 cases), Chhattisgarh (15,625 cases), Madhya Pradesh (12,727 cases), Gujarat (12,206 cases), Rajasthan (12,201 cases) and Tamil Nadu (10,986 cases).

India has seen over 2.95 lakh fresh Covid-19 cases and 2,023 fatalities in the past 24 hours, according to the Union health ministry. 54.72 per cent of the new cases are reported from these five states, with Maharashtra alone responsible for 21.05 per cent of the new cases.

There are 21,57,538 active Covid-19 cases in India. Over 1.67 crore recoveries were recorded in the past 24 hours, taking the total recoveries to 1.32 crore. 13.1 crore vaccine doses were administered on Tuesday.
PM Narendra Modi has urged the nation to follow the Covid-19 guidelines. Greeting the country on Ram Navami, PM Modi asked people to follow all the protocols in place to avoid getting the infection and keep the mantra of “dawai bhi, kadai bhi” in mind.

Veteran Marathi actor Kishore Nandlaskar died on Tuesday of Covid-19 in a Thane hospital. Kishore Nandlaskar, seen in blockbuster Hindi films like ‘Vaastav’, ‘Jis Desh Mein Ganga Rehta Hai’ as well as several Marathi films, was 81 and is survived by wife and three sons.

PM Narendra Modi addressed the nation on Tuesday over the coronavirus situation in India and asserted that lockdowns should be the “last resort” to deal with the raging pandemic. He also sought to deliver a message to reassure the nation that his government was making all efforts to augment medical care as the country was again faced with a “big battle” against the virus.

Aimed at controlling the spread of Covid-19, the Karnataka government has imposed the night curfew in the state from April 21 from 9 pm to 6 am.

Congress’s Rahul Gandhi has tested positive for Covid-19 infection. In a tweet, Rahul Gandhi said he had mild symptoms. Another party leader, Anand Sharma has been admitted to a Gurugram hospital after he tested positive for the virus.

The Telangana government on Tuesday announced a night curfew in the state between 9 pm and 5 am till April 30, following a surge in coronavirus cases. The restrictions came into effect from April 20.
