Thanjavur: Four DMK MLAs and around 525 party cadres were arrested when they blocked trains at two places – Thanjavur and Kumbakonam – today urging the Central Government to promulgate an ordinance to ensure the conduct of Jallikattu.
In Thanjavur railway junction, the DMK cadre, led by party’s South District Secretary and Thiruvaiyaru MLA Durai.
Chandrasekaran, blocked the Mayiladuthurai-Tiruchi passenger train and raised slogans. They also demanded that PETA be banned from India.
Orathanadu MLA M. Ramachandran, Urban District Secretary T.K.G. Neelamegam and Medical Wing District Secretary Anjugam Boopathi participated. Police arrested 179 persons including four women.
In Kumbakonam railway station, the party cadre blocked the same train and raised slogans pressing their demands.
They were led by the party’s North District Secretary Kalyanasundaram. Police arrested 350 persons including 20 women. The arrested included two MLAs Anbazhagan (Kumbakonam) and Govi. Chezhiyan (Thiruvidaimarudur).
