Nearly 400 DMK workers were arrested today, when they attempted to lay siege to the District Collectorate here, seeking quick completion of the overbridge and flyover works pending for the last seven years.

Led by party legislator of Singanallur N Karthik, along with former minister Pongalur N Palanisamy, the workers raised slogans against the Government for neglecting and delaying the projects initiated by the party government in 2010.

They blamed the Government for delaying the flyover project at SIHS Colony, the foundation stone for which was laid during the DMK rule as part of the Tamil Semmozhi conference in the city.

Karthik later told mediapersons that the district administration and the Government failed to pay adequate compensation for land acquisition forcing the people to move the court and obtain a stay.

The issue could have been solved if the Government had come forward and discussed it with the people, he said, adding that even an ambulance could not move along the road.

Five more projects, including a railway overbridge connecting various areas of the city, were pending and the party would intensify its agitation this the Edapadi Palanisamy government was thrown out, Karthik said.

Nearly 400 persons, including 40 women, were arrested as permission was not granted to stage the demonstration, police said.
