Technologies like remote sensing, Geographic Information System (GIS), Global Positioning System (GPS), and Geospatial Technology can now be used in effective management of natural resources, says Dr. V.P. Duraisami of the Directorate of Natural
Resource Management, Tamil Nadu Agricultural University (TNAU).

He was speaking at the inauguration of a 21-day training programme on geospatial technologies organised by Department of Science and Technology (DST), Delhi. He said that such technologies can help develop important databases on the natural resources of the country, which will support informed decision making in various development programmes.

Duraisami also said that the GIS market in India is expected to grow at a compound annual rate of 8.19 percent during the period 2012-16.

DST is keen on imparting training in the application of geospatial technologies under its Natural Resource Data Management System (NRDMS) programme. This is the third such programme offered to TNAU by DST-NRDMS, which begins on September 30 and concludes on October 20. 18 members from institutes all over the country are participating in the training programme.
