Textile industry in the region, at any given time requires three lakh to five lakh workers, Indian Texpreneurs Federation (ITF) said here on Monday.

Speaking at a function organised to distribute certificate and appointment orders in ITF member mills trained under Skilled Development Programme, its board member Srihari Balakrishnan said the industry in and around Coimbatore, Tirupur, Karur and part of Bengaluru was facing shortage of labour, particularly skilled workers.

In this background, ITF has organised a job mela where 1,000 trained candidates were given certificate and 170 got appointment orders, he said.

Giving details of the scheme under Prime Minister Kaushal Vikas Yojna, ITF convener Prabhu Dhamodaran said that in pilot phase the member mills have skill-trained 18,500 workers and in the second phase, it has signed an MoU with National Skill Development Corporation (NSDC) to train and employ 50,000 candidates.

Dr Archana Singh of NSDC, Delhi said that Prime Minister, Narendra Modi wanted the youth to get skill training and employed to take the nation forward.

Tirupur Exporters’ Association President, Raja M Shanmugham said there was the need to tap the real potential of the textile industry in India, the share of which was just four per cent in the International Market.
