Siruthuli conducts annual nature camp for Coimbatore school students

Coimbatore: Environment organisation Siruthuli conducted a Nurture Nature Camp at VOC Park. It was the 12th of the kind with focus on how to sustain the earth. The camp saw participation of 20 schools from around the city comprising 120 children accompanied by their teachers.
Five students are chosen from each school every year and trained on the importance of nature. In the welcome address managing trustee Vanitha Mohan said, the focus of education today was more on career and academics, thereby not preparing children for the world problems.

“Today everywhere we see pollution, water scarcity and all sorts of things which are connected with degradation of nature,” she said. People litterstreets, throw waste in water bodies and extract lot. It was not for the government alone to put an end to this. There was the need to make younger generation aware of such issues.
Vanitha said the organisation was creating awareness on four verticals – water management, afforestation, waste management and awareness. The sustainability of the any project wass dependent on the amount of awareness created and the number of people engaged in the programme.
The inaugural address was by Uma K. Rao who said the aim was to know about nature and encouraged children to ask questions all through the camp.
This programme is conducted annually every summer. Students need to take individual responsibility for saving water and spreading it to about 2.5 lakh students in Coimbatore.
