Petition to euthanise ailing elephant: Veterinarians examine pachyderm

COIMBATORE: Senior veterinarians on Wednesday examined Rajeshwari, the 42-year-old ailing elephant of Suganeshwar temple in Salem.

The Madras High Court had directed the concerned authorities to examine the elephant before arriving at a decision to euthanise it. Prof. Jaya Thangaraj of TANUVAS, Chennai and Vijayakumar and Kumareshan of Veterinary College in Namakkal thoroughly examined the elephant.

Rajeshwari has been lying down for the last one month, resulting in bed sores and a wound on one of its front legs forcing her to stand on a single leg. An animal activist had moved the court seeking to euthanise the elephant.

According to Forest Department sources, Coimbatore District Forest Veterinarian Dr. Manoharan also carried out a test on the elephant. The experts will be submit a report to the Animal Husbandry Department at Salem, who in turn will hand over it to HR and CE Department, which will take necessary action after submitting to the Court.
