Coimbatore: Four persons, including the manager and three workers, were arrested and remanded to judicial custody today, in connection with the seizure of large quantity of banned tobacco products from am illegal manufacturing unit in Kannampalayam on the outskirts.

Search is on for the owner of the unit, Amit Jain a native of Peethampura in New Delhi, police said.

Based on a tip off, police had raided the godown and seized large quantity of finished products and raw materials, worth crores of rupees and detained the manager, Raghuraman and three workers, haling from North India yesterday.

Preliminary inquiry revealed that 500 kg of tobacco products are being manufactured daily and sent to various States, under the instructions from Jain, stationed in Delhi, police said.

The unit reportedly has licence to manufacture scented betel nut, but illegally manufactured banned tobacco products.

Even as a special police team has left for Delhi to nab Jain, police there have also been informed about the seizure and the person, they said.

Investigation is also on whether Jain has link with other banned tobacco product manufacturers across the country and also units in other parts of Tamil Nadu and link with any political bigwigs, they said.

Case has been registered against those arrested and also Amit Jain under two sections of Cigarettes and Tobacco Act 2003.

Raghuraman and three workers were produced today before Sulur Magistrate, Vediyappan, who remanded them to judicial custody till May 13. All were lodged in the Central jail here.
