The Coimbatore Medical College and Hospital (CMCH) is awaiting government approval on an ambitious proposal to start a dental college soon.

If it gets the go ahead, this will be only the second government dental college in the state. The first government dental college, part of the Madras Medical College in Chennai, came into being in 1953, and has a student intake of just 100 per academic year.

A highly placed source at the CMCH said, “We have 65 acres of land on Avinashi Road of which only 35 acres is used.

We have ample space to accommodate another building in this campus.”

If realised, this dental college too will have the same student intake as the Government Dental Hospital and College, Chennai. The estimated cost of setting up the college was not revealed.
