‘Cancer, a man made disease’

Young Indians (Yi) , a non profit organisation of CII, organised a panel discussion on cancer – ‘CANstop CANcer’ – here, as part of their Healthy City initiative.
The panelists included Dr. K. Karthikesh of Sri Ramakrishna Hospital, Dr. Rajasekar Thirugnanam of KMCH, Dr. Arumugam Rajkumar of GKNM Hospital, Dr. Senthilkumar Ganapathi of GEM hospital and Dr. N. Sudhakar of Royal Care Hospital.
“Of the 4000 species only humans dont live in accordance with the nature. Cancer indeed is a man made disease,” said Dr. Karthiesh on the discussion titled ‘Is cancer a man made disease?’ moderated by Jayaprakash.
Dr. Rajasekar explained the three scenarios of cancer as “increased number of mutations,faulty proofreading mechanism and and a faulty immune system. Usually it is a combination of the three,” he said.
“Most common types of cancer in our country are oral cancer, stomach cancer, lung cancer and prostate cancer in males and breast cancer, cervical cancer in females. Colorectal cancer is common in both male and female,” said Dr. Senthilkumar, who introduced to the audience the term ‘Epigenetics’.
Young Indians (Yi) had previously organised health camps for 2600 sanitation workers in Coimbatore.
