Using a new ultra-modern “brain and neuronavigation system,” a city hospital successfully removed a large tumour from the brain of a 65-year-old man.

The man, from Tirupur, was suffering from memory loss and slurred speech for the past three months and recently his left hand had become inactive. Following an advice from a doctor in Tirupur, he was brought to K.G. Hospital here.

A brain scan revealed the presence of large tumour, its exact location and size by employing neuronavigation system, Dr. R.R. Ravi, Director and HOD, Department of Spine and Neuro Surgery of the Hospital, said.

“In the new system, the contours of the tumor are clearly demarcated and that helps in carrying out the dissection of the tumour meticulously, leaving the surrounding healthy tissues/cells intact,” he said in a release.

It took 10 hours to complete the surgery for removing the 7cm X 6cm tumor Ravi, who performed the surgery, said.

The patient is recuperating well now, thanks to the best health care offered to him and existence of advanced equipment, Hospital chairman, G Bhakthavatsalam said.
