Coimbatore : Nearly 100 activists of different organisations were arrested today, when they attempted to lay siege to BSNL office adjacent to that of the District Collector in the city to protest against the ‘dilution’ of the SC/ST Act by the Supreme Court.

The workers, representing Aadi Tamilar Peravai, Anti-Untouchability Movement, Thanthai Periyar Dravida Kazhakam and Left parties, under the banner of Action Committee for Social Justice assembled near BSNL office and raised slogans against the directive of Supreme Court in the Act.

They expressed apprehensions that the verdict would result in increase in atrocities against Dalits and also minorities, which of late had already on the rise. As the agitators attempted to jump over the barricades to reach the BSNL office, police prevented them and took them into custody.
