600 kg smuggled ration rice seized

District Police have seized around 600 kg of ration rice which were to be smuggled from Tamil Nadu into Kerala at the Mankarai Check Post, near Thadagam, in Coimbatore on Saturday.

According to Police, Election Flying Squad officials were on patrol at the check post along with District Police at the check post. While checking a Kerala State Transport Corporation bus which was plying from Ukkadam into Kerala, they had found out that the said amount of rice was being smuggled.

Further investigations revealed that the rice were bought from individuals at a rate of Rs. 5 per kilo, and is to be sold in Kerala at Rs. 18 per kilo.

“There were 8 persons carrying 70 kg each and the rice was reportedly boarded in the bus near Sukkuruvarpet,” a police source said.

Police seized the rice and arrested the persons. Investigations are on.
