Demanding nothing short of promulgation of an ordinance lifting the ban and allowing to conduct Jallikattu and also taking steps to ban PETA, which was playing with the sentiments of crores of Tamils, by continuously speaking against the traditional sport, the agitation by students and youths continued for the fourth day today.

Almost every sector, be it industrial, education or trades, extended support to the agitation and downed their shutters across the district.

A large number of students and their parents, with women outnumbering men and youths started coming to the VOC Park grounds, the venue of the peaceful agitation for the last three days from the early hours.

“You might have put the bull behind the bar, but lions have come out of their cages in support of the bulls,” they said. A group of students, who were at the venue all the four days said that the attempts to hijack the agitation by political parties or film stars, will not discourage their enthusiasm, as they were fighting for the pride of Tamils.

Almost 75 per cent hotels, bakeries and provision stores were closed, private buses, taxis and majority of the auto rickshaws were off the road, while Government buses plied as usual.

Industrial activities came to a standstill in and around the city, as all the Small and Micro industries downed their shutters, while nearly 5,500 knitwear manufacturing units declared holiday for workers to support Jallikkattu, with powerloom units closed in this and Tirupur district.

Majority of the medical shops, which were usually exempted during this type of situation, also remained closed in various parts of the city.

Meanwhile, many students were involved in cleaning the venue, by removing the paper pieces, empty water bottles, biscuit wrappers to make it clean, as Corporation has parked vehicles to transport the garbage.

Many NGOs and service organisations have come forward to supply food, water bottles to those in the venue, which was overflowing its capacity of about 2,5000.
