The Public Works Department would install a high-tech alarm system in major reservoirs in the State that would provide accurate information on water levels and impending floods especially during rainy season.
According to a senior official of the department the system would be installed even in water bodies of Poondi and Chembarambakkam near Chennai. The alarm would go off when the water level reaches its full capacity, he said.
“Sensors will also be fixed so that data on rainfall, inflow and water level can also be recorded at frequent intervals.”
The project would be undertaken by the Dam Rehabilitation and Improvement Project of the Central Water Commission at a cost of Rs. 20 crores.”Work has begun. Lightning conductors would also be fixed after the repair works are finished in the walls and shutters of the dams,” he added.
