Thanjavur: Students went on a massive rally in Thanjavur today to create awareness among the public on disaster management.

Collector A Annadurai flagged off the rally, which commenced near the railway junction in Thanjavur. Among others, SP J Mahesh, district revenue officer P Chandrasekaran and revenue divisional officer Jai Beam took part.

The rally was organised by the district administration to educate people about mitigation of disasters, such as earthquakes, cyclones, floods and other natural calamities. The students in the rally distributed pamphlets on the dos and don’ts before, during and after a disaster.

The district administration organised various programmes as part of the awareness drive. Fire and Rescue Service personnel were roped in to conduct mock drills in various places in the district.

In case of a disaster or natural calamity in any part of the district, people can inform the district administration by contacting the control room at the toll free number, 1077, Annadurai said.

The rally went through Gandhiji Road and Keezha Raja Veedhi, before culminating on the grounds of Rajah’s higher secondary school located near the Thanjavur Palace.
