In what can be said to be a major jolt to the opposition DMK in Tamil Nadu, party Chief M. Karunanidhi’s elder son and former Union Minister Azhagiri has said that he would not support any political party in the forth coming May 16 Assembly elections in the State.
It may be recalled that Azhagiri met with the DMK Chief in March end and there was high speculation that something beneficial to the Party would come out of it.
But Azhagiri’s “I won’t support any party. This is also applicable to my supporters”, statement at Chennai airport has come as a shock to party supporters.
DMK sources said that the party high-command had not heeded Azhagiri’s request for giving chance to his supporters to contest in the elections. Azhagiri had given a candidate wish list to his father during his first meeting with Karunanidhi on March 24.
However, Azhagiri’s younger brother and DMK Treasurer M.K. Stalin refused to accept his brother’s wish list.
“His (Azhagiri) second attempt of meeting Karunanidhi on April 14 did not yield any results. Therefore he was upset”, a senior DMK party functionary said.
