Gangsters abducted a businessman in Tirupur last night and later dumped him, with his hands and legs tied, on the Salem-Villupuram border.
According to police, Arumugam, a textile businessman, was returning home in his car when six men in police uniform stopped him and asked him to come to police station for interrogation around 9 p.m.
They got into his car and sought his property details. Later they reportedly demanded Rs. 6 crores as ransom for his release. When Arumugam told them that he had already Rs. 2 crores debt and agreed to pay Rs. 5 lakhs, they tied his hands and legs and dumped him on the roadside and sped away in his car.
Meanwhile, Arumugam’s wife lodged a missing complaint with Tirupur police when he did not reach home on time.
Arumugam managed to free himself and reached a tollgate this morning from he contacted the nearby police station with the help of toll staff. Tirupur police rushed to the spot and rescued him.
Only a few days ago, the businessman had lodged a complaint claiming that some persons were threatening to abduct him. Investigations are on.
