Captain Vijayakanth wants to be the King, not King maker

Captain Vijayakanth on Saturday night left all his suitors in a fix by keeping alive the suspense over which way he would go in the assembly elections.

Addressing a massive DMDK conclave at Kancheepuram, Captain Vijayakanth repeatedly asked the cadres whether they wanted him to be a king or the kingmaker. The resounding cadre response was that he should be the king.

“If I am king, you will all be kings,” roared Vijayakanth to a thunderous applause from the cadres, giving an indication that he would like to be the chief minister rather than play second fiddle to any other party or leader.

This more or less, for the time being at least, would be a disappointing news for the DMK, which was desperately hoping that Captain would join its alliance and give it a much needed push in its fight against Jayalalithaa. The BJP, which is also hoping that its former ally in 2014 general elections, would join the NDA fold so that it can expand its own base in a state where it has traditionally been very weak.

Of the three formations that have been wooing Vijayakanth, it is only the Peoples Welfare Front of the Left and Vaiko that seems poised to agree to make the DMDK chief a king that he wants to be. But even the PWF has kept silent over this aspect so far.

But much against expectations, Captain Vijayakanth of DMDK maintained suspense over his next political move. But his wife Premlata’s blistering attack against the DMK on the issue of corruption perhaps gives an indication that Captain may not be terribly interested to align with the Dravidian party.

One thing is very clear, Captain Vijayakanth has vowed to oust Jayalalithaa, whom he personally held responsible for all that is going wrong in Tamil Nadu.

Both Vijayakanth and his wife spent considerable amount of time lambasting Jayalalithaa, her style of functioning and held her squarely responsible for the mess Tamil Nadu is in.

Her only achievement is corruption, which is prevalent in every sphere and all across the state, Vijayakanth said while Premalata said. “From irth certificate to death certificate, corruption was reigning everywhere,” Premalata said.

The other major achievement of the Jayalalithaa government, Premalata said was every section of the society was up in arms against the government. Whether it was the government servants, sanitation workers, nurses, teachers, fishermen, anganwadi workers, everyone was on strike. Premlata said that last time it was only because of Vijayakanth that Jayalalithaa won. This time around, people will teach her a lesson, she said.
