Coimbatore City Corporation has bought five compact jetting machines to unclog underground drainage pipelines and storm water drains, relieving the sanitary workers of the Coimbatore City Municipal Corporation from the task of clearing the clogged pipelines manually.
The vehicles with the portable machines, worth Rs.12 lakh each, were flagged off on Saturday by S.P. Velumani, the Minister for Municipal Administration and Rural Development. The machines, which can clear up to 50 metres deep silt, were purchased to be used in smaller lanes. The corporation had previously purchased four bigger sized machines that are used in bigger roads. The corporation has also bought a lorry for Rs.26 lakhs, to clean the septic tanks.
Minister Velumani also distributed sanitary equipment including hand gloves, caps, reflective jackets, face masks, and footwear worth Rs.24,34,575 to the sanitary workers. He said that the ruling AIADMK is doing as much as possible to keep the cities clean and to manage solid wastes.
As many as 50 new sanitary workers were also given job orders by the Corporation Mayor, P. Rajkumar.
