Over 100 women Congress workers today staged a novel protest here, by taking a funeral procession of LPG cylinder, to condemn the Centre’s proposed move to withdraw subsidy for LPG and also increase the price by Rs 4 a month per cylinder from next year.

The workers brought a flower-decorated pall and kept a gas cylinder on it and placed a wreath near the south taluk, symbolising the `death of gas cylinders’.

The workers also brought earthen pots and firewood since poor families would have to depend on these once the subsidy is withdrawn, district Mahila Congress president Uma Maheswari, who led the agitation, said.

A few former corporation woman councillors were also present. The agitators attracted a curious crowd as passerby watched the protest.
