Cop in minor harassment case still absconding

Even as the cop, who had harassed the minor girl employed as his housemaid, continues to remain absconding, the police have started investigations into the case on Thursday. The Grade I police constable was on duty at the Counterfeit Currency Wing of the Crime Branch – Crime Investigation Division.

The details began to emerge when the mother of a 15-year-old minor girl lodged a complaint with the city police that her daughter was being harassed by constable Kamalanathan when she was living with her family in the same quarters at the Police Recruits School campus. The girl’s mother was working as a maid in Kamalanathan’s house.

Members of the All India Democratic Women’s Association staged demonstrations accusing the police of not taking any action against Kamalanathan because he was a cop. Following the protests, the then Commissioner of Police A.K. Vishwanath suspended Kamalanathan from duty, and the latter absconded soon afterwards. A case was filed in
the court and the complainant gave a statement before the Additional Mahila Court Judge on August 22.

It was noted that the statements given by the complainant to the judge contradicted her statements to the police. With Kamalanathan still absconding, the city police have started the investigations led by the Assistant Commissioner of Police (Traffic), Raj Khanna. The team had earlier questioned the complainant in the
association office.
